The Assessment Process
01
-
The first step is to connect with your school’s Special Educational Needs Coordinator (SENCo) and voice your concerns.
-
They may carry out a screener which can identify areas of weakness.
-
Contact us by email with the following details:
-
Your child’s age and year group
-
A short explanation regarding your child’s difficulties at school and at home
-
Any history of dyslexia in the family
02
-
We will give an explanation of the assessment proccess via email with all details you will need to know.
-
We ask parents/carers to fill out 2 questionnaires:
1. In-depth parent questionnaire
2. Visual screening difficulties questionnaire -
These questionnaires give us a better understanding of the child's background, their strengths and the difficulties that they are facing.
-
If the child presents with tendencies that are not exclusive to, or beyond, the dyslexia profile and Delia feels that they need to be referred on, she will advise accordingly.
-
If we believe it is appropriate for your child to assessed for dyslexia with us, we will arrange a time to speak with Delia over the phone to chat in brief about your concerns and the assessment proccess.
-
We will then send you over a provisional assessment date with details on how to secure the date and book the assessment.
03
-
When we send you a provisional date for the assessment, we will also you ask you for further background information which takes the form of:
-
A copy of the child's most recent school report
-
A teacher questionnaire which must be sent to your child's class teacher
-
-
We must have all questionnaires and reports sent back to us before the assessment date. If we do not receive all the questionnaires back before the assessment date, there will be a significant delay in the report getting back to you.
-
We will ask for a deposit and once received, a confirmation letter is sent out to you confirming the date and other details.
-
We throughouly recommend getting your child a 'school vision test' before an assessment to test for tracking and diversions, we have a number of optometrists that we can recommend to you. Any prescriptions made will need to be implemented before a dyslexia assessment can be performed.
04
-
The assessment usually starts at 9:00am and finishes by 1pm.
-
This is followed by an approx 1.5 hour face-to-face consultation afterwards with parents/carers.
-
As there are two Specialist Assessors, we are able to run through what each of the tests mean for your child’s learning outcome and whether they are dyslexic.
-
An explanation of the findings is also given to the student at the end, in a empowering and age-appropriate way.
-
We also cover next steps and action points for home, school and outside specialist intervention, where required.
-
Delia can organise a post assessment liaison by phone with your child's school SENCo, where required.
-
You will receive the written Diagnostic Assessment Report via email up to 4 working weeks (academic year) later.
